Every time that I look in someone’s mouth and see silver – mercury fillings, my heart begins to sink. This material, while used for years in dentistry is not healthy for people. The alloy known as amalgam, is a mixture of several metals and “bound” together with mercury to make it pliable. It is about 60% mercury making mercury the bulk of the material. If you consider what mercury does in a thermometer – rises and falls with temperature – and then extrapolate that to the mouth, is it any wonder that teeth crack around these restorations.
Cracked teeth are some of the biggest problems that I see. They cause pain when chewing and can progress to root canals and tooth loss. Fortunately, when we catch them early, these teeth can be saved and restored in a way that bonds pieces together and helps to prevent the sensitivity and fracture that occurs. Modern technology has given us composite resins that when used appropriately, give the tooth back the strength that it originally had.
