Ibuprofen and Coronavirus
Many of you know that I have studied with Brad Bale and Amy Doneen regarding the Bale Doneen Method of Heart Attack prevention. Brad and Amy are staunch advocates for the role of dentistry in the overall inflammation prevention that occurs in our bodies.
The statistics are very clear that if you have bleeding and inflammation in your mouth and gum tissue that you will have:
• 4 times greater risk of heart disease and heart attack
• 2.5 times greater risk of stroke
• 1.5 times greater risk of diabetes
In the light of the current pandemic that we are all facing, the UK’s National Health Service and France’s Health Minister continue to recommend that patients AVOID ibuprofen as a fever-reliever – and continue to use Acetaminophen. Dr’s Bale and Doneen STRONGLY concur with this advice.
The reasons for this are based on large studies that link their use to an increased risk of stroke. Dr. Bale cites a 2011 study pooling the clinical trials involving more than 116,000 patients and showed that these patients had a 61% increased risk of heart attack, more than triple the risk of stroke, and a 239% higher risk from cardiovascular causes.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not and NSAID (Ibuprofen) and therefore is not linked to the increased risk of stroke. However, it is equally effective as a fever reducer at home, especially for patients with cardiovascular disease. It is important to know that the UK National Health Service is NOT advising the use of Tylenol to PREVENT COVID-19, just to treat the symptoms such as fever or flu-like symptoms.
I believe that this is really good information that we must be aware of in this time of pandemic. It is our goal at Robin Steely, DDS PC to give you the best information that we can as we read, study, and learn about how the mouth and the body are intimately connected.
