I came across a recent study that was found in the journal of Experimental Gerontology that looked at 1,385 patients older than 75 years at the largest dental hospital in Shanghai, China. The study was done between Jan. 2010 and Dec. 2014. It was done to see if there was any link between the incidence of periodontal disease and respiratory disease mortality. This interested me particularly in light of the current pandemic. As we have seen, respiratory diseases like pneumonia, are pushing our health care systems to the brink in this COVID-19 pandemic.
In patients with periodontitis vs healthy patients, there was a 2.72 times increased risk for respiratory disease mortality. A significant rise in the risks for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease mortality also accompanied the rising severity of periodontitis. While cause could not be established, this study offers substantial evidence that there exists a link between poor periodontal health (gum disease) and respiratory disease in older adults, especially in smokers and increased BMI.
Health is key in this time of crisis. Manage your weight, quit smoking, and follow the guidelines that have been laid out for us by the CDC for social distancing, etc.
I can be reached at my office at 269-968-8151, by cell at 269-967-1325 or emailing me at email@example.com. We can video conference to determine the extent of your needs or emergency and if we can help you.
