This is a new era for all of us. The emergence of a new Novel Coronavirus, COVID-19, has changed the way that we do dentistry like night and day. As we comply with the governors, the Michigan Dental Association, and the American Dental Associations recommendations of social distancing and essential services, I want you to know that we are here for you. Our already stringent infection control procedures continue to be updated based on new information that is available.
As we have moved through this pandemic, aerosol infection seems to be the buzzword that everyone is talking about. The 24-hour news cycle is full of images of our physician and nursing colleagues concerned about the supply chain of personal protective equipment. My own daughter-in-law, an anesthesiologist and critical care specialist, is relating stories from her group of a low supply of N95 masks. During this time when our office is limited in scope to essential services only, I want you to know that if you have a dental emergency, we are here to serve you. We have a supply of the proper protective equipment and can take care of your needs.
Our Personal Protective Equipment Protocols at Robin P. Steely DDS in Battle Creek
To protect you and our team, we are using disposable gowns, masks and/or respirators, gloves, and eye protection for each patient. Whenever aerosols are generated, we are protecting our patients with drapes, high volume suction, rubber dams and oxygen. Air purifiers are in place in the office to maintain a high quality of air. All of our water systems use ozonated water. This is significant because ozone is an oxidizer. This means that it will attack the cell walls of bacteria, viruses, fungus, and parasites and destroy them. This results in a disinfecting or sterilizing effect. AND, it leaves no toxic effects because it breaks down to oxygen and water.
Patients that we see must be infection free, temperature free, cannot have traveled anywhere in the past 14 day. They also cannot have a fever or cough, nor have been around a family member that has tested positive or been quarantined. Patients that are low risk are defined as being under 70 years old and don’t have a history of immunocompromise (diabetes, respiratory illness, heart conditions, current chemotherapy / radiation therapy.) Another sign that has been identified of one that may be susceptible is a lack of smell or taste.
Dentistry at this time is challenging but having a having a toothache can be a real challenge. Know that we will do everything that we can to help our patients weather this storm and stay as healthy as they can.
I can be reached at my office at 269-968-8151, by cell at 269-967-1325 or emailing me at robin@steelydds.com. We can video conference to determine the extent of your needs or emergency and if we can help you.
