Have you ever thought that there might be a better way to restore your mouth than to place a bunch of crowns? When you think about it, if a tooth has all of its enamel on it, does it make sense to remove all of that good, God given coating to prepare the tooth for a crown? Does that make you MAD?
Well, in reality, MAD is an acronym and it stands for Maximum Adhesive Dentistry. When you combine that with another acronym, MID (Minimally Invasive Dentistry), you have the best of both worlds. Minimally Invasive dentistry is just that – what is the least amount of treatment that can be done to make a tooth or a bite healthy and functioning correctly.
Many times, when a tooth fractures, a dentist will look at it and say that it needs a crown. And in some cases, that is the only choice that they have. The reason for this is that the insurance “coupon” raises its ugly head and says that they will help pay for the treatment. But the question becomes, is that the best treatment for that tooth? The insurance “coupon” is designed to provide a benefit for as little dentistry as they can contract for. It keeps people in a cycle of:
cavity=filling, fracture=crown, extraction=denture until you eventually lose your teeth. It never was designed to provide for the HEALTH of a mouth. Rather only to band-aid fix something that was wrong.
High Quality, Tight Seals of Restoration
Enter the world of MID and MAD. Adhesive dentistry has entered an era where we can achieve high quality, tight seals of restorations on teeth that maintain a significant amount of tooth structure. I always believe that what God has created is infinitely better than the best chemistry and bonding that we have created. However, when we do have to restore something, wouldn’t it make sense to use materials that:
• Preserve tooth structure
• Are easily repaired in the event that something happens
• Mimic the way that tooth structure behaves in the mouth
• Don’t require removal of all the enamel
MID and MAD by Battle Creek Dentist, Robin P Steely
Minimally Invasive Dentistry and Maximum Adhesive Dentistry have paved a new path in my career. My mouth has been restored with both techniques to help preserve my bite and eliminate my headaches. I have been specifically trained with the best in the world and am now helping my colleagues learn these new ways of doing things.
