Belief & Oral Health
There is a word that I have learned recently. That word is PRAXIS. It means the integration of belief with our behavior. In other words, what we believe will affect what we do.
For many of us, the habits, opinions, and beliefs that we have grown up with affect the way that we care of our health. These habits, opinions, and beliefs are called a paradigm. If our overall belief is that we will lose our teeth as we get older, our paradigm has led us to that. If we believe that we are designed for health our entire lives, our behavior will reflect that.
In order for us to change our paradigms, our behavior, new information must come into our conscious mind. We consider it, think about it, etc. When the new information is in our thoughts, we can do whatever we want with it. It is not until we become emotionally involved with that information that it becomes part of our subconscious mind and we begin to change our behavior. With a behavior change, comes a result change. And that is where we begin to change our paradigm.
The Oral Health Connection By Robin P. Steely, DDS – Battle Creek, MI
So, what does this have to do with oral health? If we always do what we have always done, we will continue to get the same results. There is a lot of evidence that what happens in the mouth affects a person’s overall health. Bleeding gums allow bacterial invasion of the blood stream, taking bacteria that causes atherosclerosis, affects diabetes, heart disease and other autoimmune disease directly into the walls of our blood vessels. The current thinking among my medical colleagues is that inflammation IS the root cause of disease.
I believe that if we want to have the freedom to live our lives to the fullest, we must change our paradigm about our oral health. When we completely control the bacteria, we WILL NOT get gum disease or decay. When we change our paradigm and believe that it is totally up to us, we will never have to worry about losing our teeth.
This is the personification of the word that we started with – PRAXIS. When we believe that we are in control of our health AND we integrate that belief with the things that we do, our behavior, our lives change and we experience the freedom of health.
