When you think about success, what comes to mind? Successful businesses, great careers, wonderful relationships? How about success with your health? What would it take for you to feel successful and healthy? I have spent some time lately studying the thoughts of people that I consider successful. I am reading the books of Napoleon Hill, listening to recordings of Earl Nightingale, and digging deeply into what makes a person successful. I am finding that there are common threads that closely parallel our journey from disease to health.
The magic word that brings commonality to successful, healthy people is their ATTITUDE. ATTITUDE is defined as “the position or bearing as indicating action, feeling, or mood.” These actions, feeling, and moods help us determine our relationships with other people and with our health and success.
People that have a poor attitude toward work, for example, will not go anywhere with their career until they change that attitude. If we believe that we will fail, our attitude will let us know that we are whipped before we even start.
So, the question becomes, how does our attitude reflect our health? There are two models that can illustrate this very well. The disease cycle model is the typical model that most people live in. In other words,
you have a cavity = you get a filling
you break a tooth = you get a crown
you abscess a tooth = you get a root canal or the tooth extracted.
The Health vs. Disease Model – Robin P. Steely, DDS – Battle Creek, MI
This vicious cycle goes round and round until you eventually lose your teeth. AND, YOU HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY DOING IT! The health cycle model is different. If you want to get BEYOND disease, you can. This model is all about getting to the causes of disease, dealing with them at that level, and giving each person the power to control their own disease.
When your ATTITUDE is that you want to get beyond disease, you will begin to take responsibility for your mouth and your health.
You only have this life to live – live it in good Health!
